THE
MATZO FILES
In
Fall 2004, AAI launched its latest project, the Matzo Files. Originally
housed in space generously donated by Streit’s Matzo factory, the
oldest family owned matzo bakery in New York, at the corner of Rivington
& Suffolk, the Matzo Files is designed to expand opportunities for
visual artists and create dialogue between professional artists, visitors
to the neighborhood, and the immediate community of the Lower East Side.
The
Matzo Files presents original works by 250 artists in flat files.
In
addition to presenting the works of 250 artists, one drawer of the flat
files is reserved for a rotating exhibits.
“Ultimately,
the notion of combining matzo-making and art-making and of using a factory
to exhibit work proves fascinating.” - Menachem Wecker Blueprint
Volume 5 Issue 2, February 2005
“If
people see this art in a Matzo factory and are inspired by it, then it
is a good deed.” -Justin Rocket Silverman, Time Out New York, November
4-11, 2004 (quote by Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik)
The
Matzo Files is intended to be diverse and inclusive in scope. Artists
are included on a first-come-first-served basis, based on an open call.
This project helps artists get their work out into the world, and exposes
the local neighborhood to contemporary art.
