Artists not of the art world.

Adrian Cruz + R.J. Goricoff + Minn Matsuda + Gabriel Sanes + James S. Wong

Curated by Kóan-Jeff Baysa

At CUCHIFRITOS art gallery/project space.

"ausderkunstweltkunstlerenrumplestiltskin" is the conflation of two words: German for "artists not of the art world" and the name of the Brothers Grimm character who spun straw into gold. In keeping with the mission of the Artists Alliance and its project space, Cuchifritos, this exhibition affirms the creative alchemy of highly imaginative and talented artists from wildly disparate areas within the vibrant Lower East side community. The exhibition probes issues of naivete, craziness, arbitration of taste and fashion, and the value society places on art production, especially that which is perceived as falling wayward of the established system.

+ Adrian Cruz and Gabriel Sanes are schoolchildren producing their works during the recent summer art program in the Lower East Side.
+ R.J. Goricoff is a prodigious artist whose works have been exhibited at the Painting Center in Manhattan. He is a resident at Rivington House.
+ Minn Matsuda, a noted activist, was painting in her nineties until the time she passed away. She showed her work at Gallery Onetwentyeight.
+ James S. Wong is a prolific artist whose work has been shown at Cooper Union. He is in the day program at The Henry Street Settlement Community Consultation Center.
