UNHEARD OF New Artists. New Video. At CUCHIFRITOS art gallery/project space.
Unheard Of statement: Unheard Of presents an international assortment of video work. On view is video by artists from Brazil, France, Colombia, United Kingdom, Sweden and the United States. "Unheard of " dwells in the unusual, the unexpected, the unheard of. Phillys Baldino makes constructions out of disparate materials and objects in "Unknown Series (excerpts)". Baldino assembles the constructions frantically using whatever means and objects are immediately available. Baldino lives and works in New York.. USA. François Bucher references the filmwork of Godard in "Twin Murders", a non linear and autobiographical narrative that reflects upon the construction of the subject. "Twin Murders" is threaded by a real life news event involving the case of a young woman accused of murdering her twin in order to assume her identity. Colombian born, Bucher lives and works New York, USA. Paul Giangrossi frequently uses members of his family as the cast in his works. In "Leo Finds a Bird" day to day life is interrupted by disquieting occurrences. Giangrossi is an independent filmmaker and has participated in the work of swedish artist Ann Sofie Siden. Paul Giangrossi lives and works in New York, USA. Ben Judd holds a cut out of Cindy Sherman's head in varying guises over the heads of passers by in his "I remember". Narrating, as he does, through a list of fake memories. Judd is a writer/artist who works in various media. He lives and works in London, UK. Alex Villar documents himself as he performs various interventions in the New York subway. Villar focuses on small, body scaled, negative, architectural spaces to intervene with his body. Born in Brazil, Villar lives and works in New York. USA. Cecilia Lundqvist's Rebus includes six short animations, each one a reflection over diagnoses of a disease. The titles and the pictures each contribute as one piece of the puzzle. Creating, in the viewer, a will to search for the answer of the riddle is the videos main purpose. Lundqvist lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Per Hüttner documents himself doing push ups. In "Push Ups/Quest For The Perfect Mate" Hüttner couples with his female self in the process of achieving physical perfection. Per Hüttner is an artist/ curator. He lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. In Monica Oechsler 's "Strip" a gun is assembled by different young hands while off screen voices of children chant nursery rhymes. Oescheler's disorienting, slow motion editing invest the action with a peculiar, at times erotic, resonance and meaning. Born in Germany, Oechsler lives and works in London, UK. Florence Paradeis stirs up a good deal of dust in her car. The automobile moves to and from the camera, past it one way and past it again the other way. The video is a loop meant for a monitor and not the large screen. In Paradeis' work, largely photographic, the innocuous and the mundane is pregnant with an irrepressible ambiguity. Paradeis lives and works in Paris, France. -Eduardo Difarnecio 2001.
