TOMORROW unsettling visions of the ideal. At CUCHIFRITOS art gallery/project space.
TOMORROW statement: The exhibition entitled TOMORROW brings together the work of artists who present unsettling visions of the ideal. Javier Cambre's sculptures establish a dialogue between the poetics of space and the social and economic implications of architectural frames. His ongoing body of work examines the spatial construction of the self and the enforcement of normative behavior within built environments. Nick Kline's photographs document displays at convention centers and corporate trade shows . The images fluctuate between pure documents of commercial activities and a kind of formalism. Utilizing a forensic approach to the subject he avoids the critical distance often found in documentary style photography. Caitlin Masley's large scale vinyl prints create the illusion of outdoor topiary gardens within interior spaces, changing the way people respond to experience. Her photographs allow viewers to be actively involved in their own deception as imaginary windows open onto impossible vistas. All three artists capture the seductive quality of spaces designed to manipulate the viewer. They work with the notion of ideal artificial environments, whether constructed for trade shows, living situations, or simply for pleasurable outdoor contemplation. -Omar Lopez-Chahoud 2001.
