Lower East Side Rotating Studio Program


 

The Lower East Side-Rotating Studio Program provides two FREE six- month residency sessions to 8 visual artists a year. Located in the vibrant, multicultural neighborhood of the Lower East Side, the AAI Studio Programs underscores AAI's mission to support the careers of emerging and mid-career artists working in all fields. The LES-Rotating Studio Program is open to underrepresented, emerging and mid-career artists from all cultural backgrounds and disciplines - painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation and new media will be accepted. Only US legal residents may apply.

Beginning in 2011, Artists Alliance (AAI) and Residency Unlimited joined forces to support each other's programs. Residency Unlimited will provide studio visits and specific networking support to the artists participating in the Lower East Side-Rotating Studio Program. As part of the exchange and AAI's Art(Inter) Actions program, Residency Unlimited will program a series of exhibitions in the summer from its roster of international artists in residency.

Description: The residencies take place in a former classroom space about 25' by 28' ft. (approximately 700 sq. ft) The room is divided into four areas, using an open plan with passage way around the perimeter and two 8' high walls intersecting in the center of the space, perpendicular to one another.


The four studios are approximately 175 sq. ft each or about 12' x 14'. Ceilings are approximately 14 ft high. Slop sink etc. is available down the hall. Residencies are designed to encourage active engagement with the neighborhood and to benefit artists from under represented communities and constituencies.

Located at the Artists Alliance Inc., at 107 Suffolk Street, in the heart of the Lower East Side. The setting is within a community of professional working artists.To reaffirm our continuing commitment to this historically significant neighborhood, AAI sponsors the LES Rotating Studio Program.

What the residency offers: 
  • Six-month long residency. Session 1: July -  December 2012: Session 2: January-June 2013
  • Location: A shared space between 4 artists, each studio approx 170 sq ft and partitioned without a door. These studios are provided to the artists at no cost.
  • Access to the studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  
  • Opportunities to present works to curators, critics, arts professionals, and the general public.  
  •  An annual exhibition of LES-RSP residents, selected by a guest curator, is presented at Cuchifritos, AAI’s gallery and project space located in the historic Essex Street market.
