Description: The residencies take place in a former classroom space about 25' by 28' ft. (approximately 700 sq. ft) The room is divided into four areas, using an open plan with passage way around the perimeter and two 8' high walls intersecting in the center of the space, perpendicular to one another.

The four studios are approximately 175 sq. ft each or about 12' x 14'. Ceilings are approximately 14 ft high. Slop sink etc. is available down the hall.

There is a wide stairwell. Despite the fact that there are no elevators, AAI artists regularly produce sizable painting and sculptural works, and load them in and out of the building frequently for gallery shows around New York and abroad.

Note that as with all artist residencies at 107 Suffolk Street there is absolutely no living. This is work space only.

Residencies are designed to encourage active engagement with the neighborhood and to benefit artists from under represented communities and constituencies.

Located at the Artists Alliance Inc., at 107 Suffolk Street, in the heart of the Lower East Side. The setting is within a community of professional working artists.

To reaffirm our continuing commitment to this historically significant neighborhood, AAI sponsors the LES Rotating Studio Program.

The LES-Rotating Studio Program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and through the generous support and dedication of members of the Artists Alliance, Inc.

What the residency offers:
  • Six-month long residency. Session 1: January - June 2010: Session 2: July -  December 2010
  • Location: A shared space between 4 artists, each studio approx 170 sq ft and partitioned without a door. These studios are provided to the artists at no cost. (Photos of the studios are available here: studio interiors )
