Artist Statement:
I have been making dioramas since 1997. This evocative medium has
allowed me to combine several areas of my interest, including found
objects with their richness of texture and history, and the telling
of stories that are being conveyed without words, through evidence
and the body language of the figurines I create. The fact that they
are often hidden in peephole boxes adds to the surprise and voyeuristic
pleasure of the viewer. In 2001 I started a series of boxes based
on the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales, which I remembered well
from growing up in post war Germany. When I revisited the stories
as an adult, I was startled by the darkness in them (a lot of which
never made it into the translations available in the US). Many of
these stories had poignant moments in which the hero or heroine experienced
an event that turned their lives around. I imagined at the core of
these moments to be a terrible stillness, time stopping for a heartbeat.
These moments, and the feelings associated with their implied consequences,
are what I try to capture in images.
