Artist
Statement:
I work mainly in two dimensions, more often in black and white than
in color. I am in a quest for simplicity and directness. I have
always preferred simple compositions in my years of oil painting
and a simple irony in my more recent work. One figure, one viewpoint,
economically stated, conveys the complexity of an emotion.
My Acsending Festers is an intended reference to the great cartoonist
Charles Addams. I drew it for the eyes, and possible giggle, of
a great living cartoonist, Arnie Levin. The giggle was achieved
and the drawing inspired a few choice anecdotes from the two cartoonists'
friendship. Mr. Levin still teaches at SVA, but I am now more obsessed
with fine art than with completing that greeting card. The zombies
are slumped, sitting in the livingroom of the my childhood home,
rendered as accurately as I remember it, and one zombie has been
left outside. We never decided exactly what he was doing in the
window.
