BLUE MOON. 1999. Oil enamel on canvas. 72"x72"

Artist Statement:
My paintings use the understood language of cartoon to depict a world that is as man made as the world or the future of the world my be. the shiny surfaces of flat color look machine-made and straight from the factory in appearance. The "people" being depicted look and act like they are made of plastic, fake and doll like as if it was all prosthetic. many of my compositions are symmetrical and often logo like, other times they have been reduced to such a simple composition that the effect is the same sign like quality. the colors I use do not indicate light or air. my subfectsor themes often deal with generic emotions such as patriotism, religion, heroism and competitiveness. however the sentiment is meant to be real the colors are meant to be beautiful, or gross the violence and tenderness is meant to be felt. I feel that because my paintings are so artificial and so plainly painted that you can appreciate them in a no hidden messages way. If I were to paint a sunset I would hope that the viewer would enjoy it just as a sunset. In the recent paintings I add nature (trees clowds, rain, water, fire etc.) still portrayed in this artificial generic way. One can go to a B movie and forgive certain incongruities or cheep special affects and still find something that actually means something to you. as opposed to artier movies where there already is weight. these paintings are meant to be light and hopefully somewhere between the colors the line quality and the subject matter, the viewer might actually be reminded of how wonderful the world is around him!
