Xiaoqing Ding painting
Happy New Year. 2003. Egg Tempera on Panel. 16"x16".

Artist Statement:

I've been working with Egg Tempera and Silverpoint for about 5 years. Currently I'm working with a serial of Egg Tempera paintings mix with the traditional Asian old technique and modern subject matter. Most of my images come to me when I'm day dreaming or falling asleep. I enjoy incorporating ideas from ancient Chinese and Greek mythologies as well as European fairytales. The dark and mysterious stories from different countries and cultures all share similar formal devices and motifs in my work. The timeless decadent sentiments, the struggling about the good and evil happens in someone's inner self. I'm most interested in the psychological twist, the delicate nature of identity, sexuality and personal politics.
