RED ROSE,
WHITE ROSE (detail). 1998. Candy, saran wrap, wax paper, white chocolate,
and tape. 9 1/2" x 25" x 1"
Artist
Statement:
A young housewife
wraps the last baloney sandwich in wax paper and turns to the window,
wondering what she might fashion next. The wax paper emerges from
the roll translucent and untouched, a wide, expectant ribbon. She
gingerly lifts the ephemeral swath and begins to cut, estimating the
measurements of her own body. Edges of the wax paper become scalloped
and adorned with meticulous rosebuds. Row after row of dotted lace
is snipped, folded under, and attached to the various garment parts.
The housewife cuts and shapes obsessively, her fingers delicately
attempting to leave no record on the smooth, pale surface. But the
wax paper shows small wrinkles and creases of underestimation. Accidental
pinholes prick the front and rear panels. Still, she continues, adding
seams to curves, threading the waxy lace with a thin, buttery strip
of weightless white. With time, she knows it may yellow, but now it
seems eternally pristine. In one last act, she molds the various pieces
into one, hoping her guesses have been correct. Top edge lines up
with top edge, but gapes and puckers below. Odd union, alone, allows
the two to join. The last seam in place, she holds the garment up
to the light, watching the barest of shadows. Each blossom is echoed
by a faint after image, a trace of darkness. Every fold shows its
doubled thickness, allowing only half-light. Carefully, she lays the
garment away in a drawer and turns to wash the dishes.
