FRESH PRODUCE

Recent artwork by members of the Artists Alliance / Alianza de Artistas at Charas/El Bohio 605 East 9th St. between Aves. B and C August 16th - 27th gallery hours 5 - 8pm curated by Maya Puchkoff and David Pushkin Presented in conjunction with the N. Y. International Fringe Festival as part of FRINGE ART.

"In July, 2000 John Clancey, director of The Present Co. invited Artists Alliance / Alianza de Artistas to participate in the Fringe Festival. He came with an interest in expanding the festival to include visual art. We approached Charas/El Bohio with a proposal for an exhibition in their gallery. Although the Artists Alliance / Alianza de Artistas has had Open Studios, where the artists show work in their own spaces, it was a wonderful opportunity to see the diverse works of Alliance members side by side in a single gallery. For this summertime show, we asked for recent work. Thus 'Fresh Produce.'" - Maya Puchkoff

The New York International Fringe Festival: It's theatre, dance, puppetry, spoken word, multi-media... in short, it's a twelve day celebration of more than 180 of the best emerging theatre companies and performing artists in the world. Each year FringeNYC is held on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, in 20 venues within fifteen blocks of each other. All of them are easily accessible by mass transit, and within walking distance of parking!

FringeART - Art is everywhere, and at FringeNYC you can stroll through neighborhood galleries and enjoy the visual thrill of the painting, sculpture, and installations that the galleries of the Lower East Side provide year round.

CHARAS/El Bohio is a multi-ethnic cultural and community center on the Lower East Side, with special importance for the majority Latino community of the surrounding neighborhood. During the nearly 20 years that it has operated out of a former school building on East 9th Street, CHARAS provides studio, performance, and rehearsal space for artists; recovery programs and art therapy classes; dance and martial arts classes; after school and youth programs, including Recycle-A-Bike; computer training workshops; a public art gallery; and meeting space for countless community organizations.

The event showcased painting, sculpture, photography, and installation art. The spacious gallery at CHARAS proved to be a fantastic venue for FRESH PRODUCE.
