Briefly On View

An ART(inter)ACTION Program for
CUCHIFRITOS art gallery/project space

Briefly on view highlights emerging artists working in video, giving them the opportunity to display their artwork during installation periods between exhibitions at Cuchifritos.

March 9 - 12, 2010

Arielle Falk, BOUND, 2009, digital video, 1:10, variable dimensions

Work Description

In this minute long stop motion video piece, mannequin parts are gradually attached to me with ropes and chains, forming a walking sculpture. Original music accompanies.

This piece explores the mind-body relationship, specifically the human condition of being non-detachable from, or bound to, our physical selves. BOUND also examines the burden of body image stereotypes that pervade modern American culture.

January 12 - 15, 2010

Elise Roedenbeck, Born Outside, animation 2009

As an artist, I often find myself outside of the beauty prescribed by institutions in place to promote and preserve art. Born Outside is a re-acceptance of myself, an effort to strip away layers of impurity and return to my place as an artist while recording and reflecting upon my experiences.

In this animation, I wanted to deviate from the formal principals and structures taught in school. The piece is animated in a 'straight ahead' fashion, each drawing shaping and warping the next. Rather than relying too much on computer software, I tried to construct the timeline from a stream of consciousness recorded on paper with drawing. Each frame was individually colored with ink and watercolor. The bulk of the piece was shot using an old piece of animation equipment called a Toolwork's Lunchbox. It shoots individual frames and records them to digital video tape. The final piece was edited with computer software. In some instances of the work, I decided to make computer manipulation obvious; however, my ultimate goal was to veer away from the formal principles of animation.
