“Open/Close” Curated by Maymanah Farhat Cuchifritos is pleased to announce as part of AAI’s Art(Inter)Action program, an exhibition in collaboration with The South Asian Women’s Creative Collective juried and curated by Maymanah Farhat (art historian). This forthcoming exhibition will surround the thematic premise of “open/close”. Prospective artists were invited (but not limited) to propose work that investigates this framework along artistic, theoretical, or sociopolitical lines within a local or global context, through the personal or the collective. Given that Cuchifritos is located within a busy commercial setting that is often an informal meeting place for the Lower East Side’s diverse community, artists are encouraged to consider the context of exhibiting in a venue that is essentially a space within a space. How are the dynamics of an artwork altered or impacted by the bustling activities of an interior microcosm of the city? How might such an exhibition space affect or change the everyday happenings of an unsuspecting passerby?
ART(INTER)ACTION Series Residency Unlimited at Cuchifritos Gallery and Project Space. Beginning in 2011, Artists Alliance (AAI) and Residency Unlimited have joined forces to support each other's programs. Residency Unlimited provides studio visits and specific networking support to the artists participating in the Lower East Side-Rotating Studio Program. As part of the exchange and AAI's Art(Inter) Actions program, Residency Unlimited will program and organize a series of exhibitions in the summer from its roster of international artists in residency.
CUCHIFRITOS is a program of Artists Alliance, Inc.(AAI) and its focus is on art as it relates to community, social issues, and public space. AAI's ART(INTER)ACTION program provides an opportunity for development of alliances and connections between art institutions in a variety of communities and is supported, in part, by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. We thank the following for their generous support: the Foundation for Contemporary Art, The New York City Economic Development Corporation and members of Artists of Artists Alliance Inc. Special thanks go to our team of dedicated volunteers, without whom this program would not be possible. |
